When the first positive displacement downhole sampler was introduced into the market in the late 1980's, it was nearly 13 feet long. This new sampler opens and closes downhole instead of running in the well with the valves open like older flow through samplers. The positive displacement downhole sampler requires a second chamber. During sample acquisition, a displacement or priming fluid is transferred to the secondary chamber. The displacement fluid must not be discharged into the well to avoid contamination. The new sampling technology was originally developed in the North Sea. On offshore platforms, downhole tool length proved to be fairly irrelevant. However, many onshore service companies had difficulty handling the new downhole sampler due to its length.
Since Leutert started manufacturing positive displacement downhole samplers, reducing its length has always been one of our major goals. Our PDS short positive displacement sampler is the shortest sampler available with a confirmed sample volume of 600cc. Today we offer an even shorter version of the positive displacer sampler. The PDSeven has an overall length of just 7.5 feet and offers a sample volume of 300 cc. The PDSeven weighs only 37 lbs, allowing onshore companies to benefit from positive displacement well technology.
